chords and
want to learn more.

been playing for a while and know several tunes, but I've hit a
plataeu and need something to
get me going again.

- Chris Carr - Irish Flute/Pennywhistle
- Tin Whistle I: (Beginner)
OK,
so you bought the thing. It was
inexpensive, and it looked simple enough…
I mean, how hard can it be to play a little tin tube with six holes,
right? Kids play it over there “across the pond,” don’t they? --This workshop is for those of you who have
never held a whistle and those of you who have but would like a little
help. We’ll learn a little bit about the
whistle, start from square one and have you playing scales before you leave. A musical background isn’t necessary, but if
you know your stuff you won’t be disappointed—there’s something for everyone
here!
- Tin Whistle II: (Beginner & Intermediate)
Alright,
so scales are easy… tunes can be, too!
We’ll expand on the simple principles we learned in Tin Whistle I, put the absolute basics together and see what we can
do with them. We’ll take the traditional
Irish tune “The Dunmore Lasses,” analyze it a little and perhaps rearrange it a
little (oh, the horror!) so it
becomes surprisingly easily accessible.
Already comfortable on the whistle?
Come sit next to someone who isn’t—sometimes it helps to see and hear it
done.
- Tin Whistle III: (Intermediate & Advanced)
You’ve
got a handle on the thing, you can play a scale or two and the tunes aren’t so
daunting anymore. We’ll keep at “The
Dunmore Lasses” while introducing some fun new stuff for those of you who are
interested in what makes it sound so uniquely Irish. We’ll dispel some of the mystery that
surrounds those tricky little things called “ornaments” on the tin whistle,
making them accessible to everyone.

The (Not-So-) Simple System: An Introduction to the “Irish”
Flute
The wooden (or timber) flute has appeared in various
forms in many cultures around the world, though perhaps the most unique and
expressive styles of playing it have developed out of the traditional music of
the Celtic nations. The wooden flute is
often the next step for the tin whistle player and offers unique challenges to
the classical flautist as well. Come
find out what revolutionary development in European classical music was
“instrumental” in the birth of the Irish flute style. Bring your flutes (of all types!)—this
workshop will be part history and part hands-on!
